Follow through
We are often reminded about the narrow scope of trustee responsibilities. But claiming trustee hands are tied by the Ministry is not an excuse when children are paying the price.
Do we let the Ministry and teacher unions have free rein on what and how our children are taught? Do we sit quietly on the sidelines while students are harmed?
Of course not.
The Board of Trustees is the most local mechanism for getting things done, free from partisan politics. If the Ford government won't take on the Ministry, then the WRDSB has a duty to advocate for students.
While doubtless trustees are legislatively constrained, they needn't be silent. It's neither kind nor inclusive to allow activists to miseducate students. We have a duty to do right by kids, and that means calling out the Ministry and unions.
